All my life Umno leaders have said that they are not understood by the outside world.
Let’s take that statement on face value.
The ideas, philosophies, history and contributions.
Let’s work with that and ask the question, perhaps all of us have got it wrong while Umno has been spot on.
The what-if analysis, for Umno.
The past – according to Umno
Malaya is a unique (I apologise for absolute butchery of this word throughout this piece) peninsular with a vibrant society built on a feudal society. It was harmonious that way, being feudal.
The British – and before them other unscrupulous nations like the Thais, the Chinese, the Portuguese, the Dutch etc – forced upon these states in Malaya, imperialism.
The British were ruthless in bringing in indentured labour who prospered under the care of the imperialists who were strangely drawn to these migrants only.
There was no awakening in the 1920s that Muslims should be liberate themselves from the conservative ridden values of the istana and their advisers, and instead seek a progressive Islam as seen by the propagation of ideas from Al-Azhar University and the Turkish Attaturk revolution.
In the 1930s no trade unionist challenged the oppressive work conditions and pay. They did not risk death. The communist party was not in the forefront of the fight.
The Malay working class thinkers were not working low-paying jobs and wrote and challenged arcane ideas.
The Japanese occupation was cruelest only to future Umno leaders, because their superior education, willingness to kowtow to the Nippon flag and unwillingness to join the revolt by the working class in the jungles was very dangerous.
The Japanese hated those who agreed to them most.
The war did not end with most Umno leaders working for the Japanese.
The post-war period was filled with unnecessary trouble commoners, while pencil-pushing future Umno Independence heroes were just sitting back with their white tuans.
And since independence, they have just been the picture of hospitality. Giving citizenship to all these migrants, and ruling fairly.
If these are the truths, why are you unable to defend them?
The absolute inability of Umno and its members to defend its history, its contribution and philosophy in open discussion has to mean something.
The defence that Malaysia is unique is not an answer.
Unique at best is a word, a description. You usually would need to add many more words to make it a sentence and then with enough inspiration conjure up a paragraph. That can start to look like a response.
I was at a function today and the question was “what are the reasons for this policy?”
The answer from someone in an organisation run by Umno for 50 years was, “We discussed the matter in length in our meetings.”
I wanted to blast the girl, but I understand that she is not used to people actually answering questions.
There are no answers, just sides. If you are on the side that is in charge then you have to be right.
This internet thing is killing Umno.
The internet’s main fuel is multi-level and organic transfer of ideas, and it does not cease.
Umno’s fuel has been singular top-down and reduced transfer of unchallenged facts, and it starts and stops when they like.
A whole nation, its government, schools, its playing fields danced to this tune, and in the last 10 years the whole thing has turned on its head.
No more does Umno run the show. The others (all those not Umno) have not run the party down, the exposing of Umno’s colossal inability to rationalise has just kept drilling the party to a bleeding death.
And as an impudent child, it can’t understand why everyone can’t shut up.
It is not logical to the world, hoping to just shut everyone up, but to Umno since they have always got their way, behaving like a lout and bully is just being themselves.
So I think enough of putting with trying to understand Umno. It’s time for Umno to understand everyone else- and that can be the tip for the party to survive.
A lot of people tell me that the Umno youth chief election is key – Mukhriz, Khairy or Toyo will run the future.
I say nay, I say none of them will do so. The clockdown is on for their party.
The party cannot survive the march of modernity – which they have for decades for their own benefit. It is the world that is killing Umno. The process is being rushed because Umno never deals with anyone on other than their own terms.
Just like first prime minister Abdul Rahman who would avoid someone he will disagree with or probably lose out on intellect – the party is built on avoidance.
You can’t avoid this storm. Its being provided for with exceptionally but service by TMnet combo deals.
